Did you make a new year’s resolution?
What was it?
To lose weight and get in shape? Quit smoking? Double your income? Spend more time with your family and friends? Work less? Get your finances in order?
Have you already broken your resolution?
The thing about resolutions is they don’t work. How many times have you resolved on New Year’s Eve/Day to lose weight or get healthy? How many times do you resolve to spend more time with your loved ones this year? This year will be different you tell yourself. This year I will stick to my resolutions.
Well, look around you, 99% of people break their resolution the first week of January. It isn’t just about procrastinating or giving up; it all comes down to the how you make the resolution in the first place.
I never make resolutions.
The word resolution comes from resolve. When you resolve to do something, it sounds like WORK to your brain. Even though we all know logically we must work accomplish our goals and dreams, your subconscious will shy away from anything that sounds like extra work. Work is a four letter word to the brain.
Also once you have resolved something, it is done, complete. So your brain thinks you have already accomplished your ‘resolution’. Talk about confusing.
Instead, decide. There is a big difference to resolving (sigh…work) to losing weight and DECIDING to lose 10 lbs by February 1st. The latter is a measurable goal.
With goals, you create an action plan, and then go out and DO IT! Goals take commitment. Sure they take work too, but you can envision a goal or dream. Your brain is on board. You can see it and feel it. Once you decide what you want and how you want to feel, you can then go out and make a plan. Then follow your plan! That’s it. Decide, commit (believe), plan, act.
For example, I actually make three goals at the beginning of each year. I make a plan for each goal and then every day I do some small task that gets me closer to my goal. You can do this too. It doesn’t matter the size of the goal. Big or small, the same process works.
Don’t make resolutions you will break. Decide what you truly want and then put a plan in place that enables you to achieve your goals and dreams. Then go out and do it.
